KESC meet stakeholders to tackle unemployment in the City
Last week the City of Kigali through its Kigali Employment Service Centre (KESC) held a breakfast meeting with all actors in the fight against unemployment. Participants agreed on the need to work together for the benefit of all job seekers.
In his opening remarks, Mr Pascal Nyamulinda, the Mayor of the City of Kigali talked about the problem of unemployment and the collaboration with different stakeholders in curbing it down. He also requested Business Development & Employment Units (BDEs) and other stakeholders including JADF to effectively collaborate with KESC in the fight against unemployment.
The BDE Director from Gasabo said that the employment percentage in Gasabo is 78% but most of them are involved in the informal sector. He talked of different tools kits that are being provided by them including Udukiriro and others. He also mentioned some challenges including lack of strategic land where to put different activities and requested for field tours to learn more and facilitate a lot.
Kicukiro BDE Director thanked the City of Kigali for its program that facilitates the street vendors, and further thanked BDF for the support of collateral security guarantee that it given to the youth to help them to get loans. He also noted the assistance all cooperatives are getting from SACCOs to start their business.
Nyarugenge BDE Director said that trainings are being given to fresh graduates about entrepreneurship and further facilitate them to get some equipment. She mentioned the access to loans from different financial institutions in favor of different job seekers who have already started their self-employment projects. She also talked of the partnership between transport companies like Royal Transport Company to employ different job seekers not forgetting facilitating the children from technical trainings from IWAWA and connect them with construction, carpentry companies and others.
Business Development Fund (BDF) representative assured that youth are subsidized for loans collateral security up to 75%. He added that BDF provides subsidized loans to SACCO’s for refinancing. They also give quasi equity, micro learning advisory services, capacity building and many others
The representative from the National Employment Programme (NEP) talked of the services that they provide including Rapid Response Training, equipment to use and different toolkits. He requested the BDF, WDA and Employment Service Centers to wok hand in hand so as to deliver. He further talked of labour export where workers will be exported to the respective countries that signed MoUs of collaboration in order to ensure conducive and favorable working environment.
Closing the breakfast meeting, the Vice Mayor Social Development, City of Kigali proposed to all the participants that this meeting should be always done quarterly and bring on board the powerful potential employers for their views and contributions to the employment intervention.
